Another great Clear Creek basketball star is gone but not forgotten. James Davis, our first all-state player, has died. He played on the first two state tournament teams with Webster in 1956 and the new Clear Creek school in 1957.
The Wildcats have had many great shooters but he is part of the list that includes such as Bennie and Curley Lenox, Paul Hackett, Paul Trcka and several others. He had a school record 16 points in one quarter and later scored 38 points in a third place 1957 state tournament win over Bowie. He scored 1,022 points in his two year career.
He and Robert Brown formed an outstanding guard combination for that 1957 team that finished 33-3 and was undefeated in district play. Both went to Rice on basketball scholarships after playing on Wildcat teams that had a 66-4 two year record.
James was also a baseball player and played center field on Dub Kelly's team that beat West Columbia in bi-district play.

James played on our third and fourth district championship teams and was certainly a key figure in building the basketball dynasty that won 19 in a row, the longest in Texas history.

A memorial service was held July 8 at League City's American Legion hall and was well attended. His number 22 was on display.
Good friend Robert Brown came from out of state and he and William Frost are now the only two living starters from the team that went to the state tournament 60 years ago without a six footer.
