At Southwest Texas State, Coach played for Milton Jowers, who was an outstanding football and basketball coach at the San Marcos school. I've heard Coach say that he did not like the way his coach handled players but he certainly respected him for his knowledge of the game. Like him personally or not, Jowers turned out many fine high school basketball coaches.
Henry Bauerschlag and Les Talley were also great coaches at Clear Creek and both were tutored by Jowers. So was Bill Krueger, who reeled off seven straight district champions after succeeding Bauerschlag.
Other disciples of Jowers were Joe Peery and Aubrey Horner, who developed Alvin into a big hurdle for us. Another was Jimmy Littleton, who had a state power at South San Antonio. And there were many others. A check of the program at the state tournament would always have some erstwhile Bobcats listed among the coaches.
Coaches Carlisle and Talley could really add to this thread and I hope that they will. SWT alumnus Ralph Parr, who so far has been worthless in here, could do so too.
Another good feature would be the coaches' comments on Jowers, his practices, game behavior and such. I recall our guys talking to the Alvin coaches at a game and Horner saying that Jowers had mellowed some by the time he played for him. "He even let us play the radio on road trips," he said.
I think Joddie coached, but I'll leave it to him to tell us how great he was.

Shame on me for not remembering Joddie Witte's coaching career. He is another Jowers disciple.
I don't know how long he coached but he took a team to a state tournament that I attended along with Clear Creek. I forget the year.
I believe his team was Hutto. Joddie has promised to be in here before now. When (if) he ever does, maybe he will see this and give us some details on his coaching career.
He retired as a school superintendent and still serves various schools in an interim capacity.

Boonie Wilkening also played for Jowers and coached for a while. He brought a Weslaco team to our tournament.

Joddie Witte told me that he posted something but I can find no evidence of it. Perhaps he is having a problem like Pat, can read but not post.
He is trying though and hopefully we will see something from him soon.

Joddie Witte coached at Hutto and he served many years at Hays CISD, concluding as Superintendent. He retired in 1997 and became interim supt. at many districts, fixing problems. I served on the HCISD board 12 years and Joddie Witte was a fine Supt.

It's good to get that comment from Bryce Bales.
And, if a non-Clear Creek someone named Bryce Bales is willing to post in here, why not someone named Ralph Parr? Or Lynn Davis? Or Robert Brown? Or Bennie Lenox? Or Bill Doty? Or Mike Davis? Or Joe McKinney? Or many, many others?

Being a former superintendent myself, I know it is always nice and sometimes even a miracle to have someone say you did a great job, especially after you have left. So, thanks Bryce for your heartfelt tribute to Joddie. I know he did as good a job there as he always did on the althletic fields of play.
