The 1954 team won its first 28 games and got our basketball dynasty off to a plumb loverly start.
That was easily a school record but it lasted only two years as the 1956 squad started off 32-0. Pat Jensen was a starting guard on that team and told me recently that he doesn't remember much being said about it when they broke the record.
The record breaker was a 55-44 win over Alvin. Robert Brown led the scoring with 18 points and maybe the reason Pat doesn't remember much about is that he was the only starter who did not score in double figures that night. However, it was the only time he was in single digits in the last ten games of his high school career.
The Alving game finished district play and Nederland, who beat us the year before with Boonie Wilkening severely hobbled with an ankle sprain, was the victim this time in the next game, 70-57, as Paul Blanchard scored 19 and James Davis 16.
Next up was the regional tournament in Victoria and El Campo and Dobie Craig, a great all round athlete. We prevailed, 61-50 and beat Weslaco and another great athlete, Bobby Lackey, in the championship game, 75-67. Lackey was later a starting quarterback at the University of Texas. Paul Blanchard scored 26 points against him. Robert Brown had 16 and Pat Jensen 14.
So, we went to Austin for our first state tournament with a 32-0 record. Phillips knocked us off in that epic 84-81 shootout and we bounced back for third place against Waxahachie, 76-73.
That record stood for 12 years until we took a 35-0 record into bi-district behind two all-staters, Richard Huhn and Scooter Lenox. There the story ended in great sadness.
However, the 1963 season ended with great gladness as we won our first, and only, state championship. We won our last 11 games and you may wonder how far we extended that streak during the next season. I'm sorry to report that we lost our first two games.
Here's a question that Lynn Davis can help us with but anyone is eligible.
What was the score when Conroe shattered our 35 game undefeated season and knocked us out of the playoffs? How many points did we get from Richard Huhn and Scooter Lenox, our two all staters?
