When Coach got his program rolling, most played on the junior varsity as sophomores under Henry Bauerschlag, then were ready to become prime time performers on the varsity their last two years.
Bennie Lenox, Paul Timmins and Bill Doty come quickly to mind as rare ones who started as sophomores but there were hardly any others.
How about freshmen? Unheard of for a long stretch but it did happen in the early years. But, I can think of only two and they played on Coach's second team at Webster. They were Joe Barba and George Lugo. Lugo was a really promising prospect but he was a Bayland Home boy and moved away after that season. Barba went on to play on our first district champion as a senior.
Here are some other names from the days of yesteryear on that 1951 team: Ronnie Cox, Frankie Kagawa, Louis Balderas, Ralph Smith and Kennith Dismukes.
After the Carlisle/Bauerschlag regime, I can recall two who were on the varsity as freshman. They were Hank Bauerschlag and Paul Smith, the son of Ralph mentioned above. Were there others?
If my memory serves me correct, Billy Carlisle suited up and played some on the varsity as a freshman.

That is probably not correct. That was a long time ago and memories fade. Even brother Buddy is not for sure but he thinks not. Buddy was playing for Baylor at the time.

Actually Buddy says he was a senior when Billy was a freshman. But Billy played on the junior varsity that year.

Hank definitely played varsity as a freshman. Billy did suit up and play some games on vasity as a freshman. Maybe even a guy by the name of Owens played as a freshman during that time. I was on the sophmore team coached by Boyd Sylestein and remember Billy suiting up very well. I transfered to S.A. Churchill the next year, but played against Brad Wolfe at Trinity & Dave Boring at San Jac several years later.

Paul Smith played as a Freshman in 1975.

My guess would be Hank Bauerslag, Doug Owens, Paul Smith, Charles Fordjour and Roger Jordan.

I haven’t posted on here in a long time but saw the topic and we have a good freshman playing on Varsity this year, 2018-19. Seth Jones has moved into a starting role and become one of our leading scorers during district play. The Wildcats are 21-6 on the year and 6-1 in district. Dickinson leads the league at 7-0 with 5 games to play.
