You folks would not believe this if you did not know that my lifetime motto has been truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth.
While meandering through the Southwest Texas State athletic media guide history section, I was suprised to find that Coach played on a losing team in his first year at the San Marcos school. It wasn't just any old losing record, it was a 3-18 losing record. But wait, it gets worse.
Bear in mind now that he was a big time winner at Prairie Lea High and that included two state basketball championships. But, his "baptism of losing" awaited when he arrived at SWT after one semester at Baylor.
Now, time for some details on that 3-18 record. Tough schedule perhaps? Well, let's look at it. Somebody called Navigation School was first on the list and dealt out three straight losses, followed by two setbacks to PDC Headquarters and two more to McCloskey. I'm not making this up.
Two more losses to Kelly Field made the record 0-10 on the way to 16 straight losses. Finally a win, 52-41 over North Texas. Two more losses and then two straight wins to close the season. Just when the Bobcats were getting hot, their schedule ran out of games.
I don't recall Coach ever talking about his first year at Southwest Texas State.
