How could a Santa Fe game be interesting, you ask? Has Santa Fe EVER beaten a Clear Creek basketball team? I cannot answer that but I can say that it did not happen from 1950 through 1964 as we won all ten between the two teams.
But, as I was browsing through my dusty old record book, a certain box score caught my attention. The 60-40 score was closer than one would expect and a search reveals we won, 70-23 in the first round district game. Well now, how many points did our big guns that year, Chuck Trcka and Bennie Lenox, score? Lo and behold, they did not even play! Coach held them out along with senior Bob Pell. Those three had played only one half in the first game and had totaled 29 points, so Coach must have decided to get some minutes for his reserves in the second game.
It appears that the starters were Jimmy Pell, Dickie Baker, Bobby Crawford, Kenneth Lunday and Jack Powers. I did not see the game, by the way. Someone else's handwriting is in the box score. Starters Richard Counts and Hugh Taylor made appearances in the second half and starter Edward Davis entered the game in the second quarter. Sir Edward had the highest scoring game of his career with 24 points, hitting 7 of 9 from the floor and 10 of 10 from the foul line.
Of the starting group, Kenneth Lunday scored eight points, Jimmy Pell six, Bobby Crawford four, Jack Powers three and Dickie Baker two. It appears that only Pell and Lunday played much in the second half. Take a look at their shooting percentages, although they may not want to. Those five hit 9 of 36 field goals and it's easy to figure that percentage without a calculator. They were only slightly better from the free throw line with 5 of 18. I wonder if Ed Davis gave them tips on shooting the next day? I wonder about such things. I don't know if Trcka, Lenox and Bob Pell do or not. I do know that I wish I had seen the game.
