Coach Carlisle had a sterling record at Clear Creek (327-65) and so did junior varsity coach Henry Bauerschlag but I have a friend that has a term to describe the records of Bobby Proctor and Les Talley at the junior high level. "Sheerly sterling," is what he would say.
Proctor's team lost one game in 1953 and another the next year. He slumped to two losses in 1955 but the bottom really fell out at 14-14 the next year. I am sure that he was reprimanded and had to promise never to let it happen again.
True to his promise, he lost only the one game in each of the next four years. However, he was only 28-2 the next year and left for White Oak. He no doubt was under pressure to depart. He was fortunate to get the job at White Oak. At his interview there, he was asked about that bad year but perhaps they were mainly interested in his overall 236-25 record.
Talley must have known he dare not have a bad year, although he may have gotten some criticism for his 20-1 record in 1957 because he went undefeated the next three years. His overall record was 162-14 and we wouldn't let him go to White Oak.
For some reason, I only have records for five junior varsity seasons of Bauerschlag and those totaled 102-31. Proctor and Talley probably wouldn't even talk to him.
Coach Proctor was a Navy man and had a friend that was a boxer. It seems that some Navy guys could "box" for cash. Coach Proctor's friend talked Coach into boxing for some of that "cash". He probably needed it for smokes! Anyway, one time Coach drew a real muscle bound guy & thought he was in trouble for sure. His friend, who was a more experienced boxer, had drawn a real skinny kid. Coach wanted to switch. His friend did not want any part of the switch. Coach fought the muscled guy & did all right. His friend fought the skinny kid & got beat up real bad. Coach had lucked out & made his "cash".
