I'm fuzzy on the year it started and other details but I well remember the impact that it had on our team and our rivals.
I think it was the senior year of Paul Timmins and Norman Lunday and I know the instigator of a tremendous tidal wave of student body enthusiasm was Calvin DuBois, a football player. He had had a very good senior year as a defensive lineman and hard running fullback but this extroverted senior, at some point, got his cronies--and the student body, and the fans in general, all lathered up at games with much, much early noise and the stirring chant, "We want state, we want state, we want state..."
We didn't win state in 1961. We finished second and wore the all too familiar third place collar the next year. Curly Lenox did lead us to the title in 1963 but I think by then the game by game chant had died away. I do remember the "We Won State!" as our fans stormed the Gregory Gym court after we won that glorious first state championship.
Someone else help me remember things and post your comments on Calvin DuBois and Gang.
Now I know that Paul Timmins and Bill Doty could add to this thread as they were playing when DuBois and his Gang were screaming. What effect did this super school spirit have on the team?
It appears that Timmins and Doty played basketball a whole lot better than they post on a blog.

Timmins and Doty are decided disappointments, deep, dark, dank and dismal.
